A WORLD HERITAGE - THE OLDEST AND LARGEST IMPACT CRATER - ON GAUTENG'S DOORSTEP |

DID YOU KNOW?
ASTEROIDS THE BIGGEST THREAT TO LIFE - World renowned physicist Stephen Hawking believes that one of the major factors in the possible scarcity of intelligent life in our galaxy is the high probability of an asteroid or comet colliding with inhabited planets. But NASA says it doesn't have the money to track all the dangerous asteroids that could hit Earth.

KALAHARI 3 DAY SAFARI
The Kalahari desert is part of the huge sand basin that reaches
from the Orange River up to Angola, in the west to Namibia and
in the east to Zimbabwe. The sand masses were created by the
erosion of soft stone formations. The wind shaped the sand
ridges, which are so typical of the landscape in the Kalahari.
Only in recent geological history, 10 to
20,000 years ago, were the dunes stabilised through vegetation,
so the area should actually be called a dry savannah. Unlike the
dunes of the Namib Desert, those of the Kalahari are stable and
not wandering. Join us on for a unbelievable journey to the
Kalahari! PRICE R3895 PER PERSON! |

The red glow of the rising Kalahari sun
illuminates the majestic and rugged walls of the Orange River
Gorge announcing the start of an unforgettable day filled with
sun, fast rapids and breathtaking scenery… yes, you’ve guessed
it; white water rafting at its best! An incredible four day
experience or rather “expedition” undertook by TBI that I wish
to share with anyone that’s willing to listen, or read (in your
case). So when you’re ready, let’s take a “row” down memory
lane…
A well prepared and very excited TBI team left Pretoria on the
12th of June on a quest for fun, adventure and some quality team
time… Our destination: Kakamas (The trail’s main base). Two
unfortunate incidents prior to our departure left the team a bit
shaken and caused three team members to miss the trip, but true
to TBI culture team members sought to make the most of the
experience in spite of the circumstances... so with spirits high
and little sleep we started off on the 804 kilometre journey to
Kakamas.
On arrival at “main base” we met Graeme Addison a.k.a. riverman,
South Africa’s rafting and kayaking guru, who is known and
recognized for his pioneering of river routes in South Africa
and the development of the widely used CROC or “krokedil” (a
two-seater raft). For many of us this was our first acquaintance
with and introduction to the world of lifejackets, helmets and
rushing water and we couldn’t have asked for a more experienced
guide to show us the ropes. After fitting and packing rafting
equipment and of course a glass of red wine, we turned in as the
stage was set for our dance with the waves the next day.
At first light we got up, packed our bags and headed off to
ONSEEPKANS, the border post between South Africa and Namibia
where the Orange River weaves its way through the vast Kalahari
(Another 150 km’s drive from Kakamas). Here we enjoyed a
scrumptious and very filling brunch prior to getting our toes
wet.
Liquid 360 Adventures’ great, no wait... their excellent
catering and professional service was above and beyond what was
expected and it greatly enhanced our experience! Every meal was
a highlight and having Eben and Kobus as a part of our team was
a definite treat and unexpected bonus.
So with tummies full and hearts racing with excitement we were
off with our camping gear tightly secured in and to the rafts,
ready to explore the Nile of Africa. Our first day on the river
allowed us the opportunity to get a bit of a feel for the rafts,
rowing and our rowing partners before attempting the bigger and
longer rapids. Later in the afternoon we set up camp at Flat
Rocks and enjoyed a nice hike up to the mountaintop close to our
campsite. The evening (as most other evenings of the trip) was
spent enjoying really good food, great company and of course
deciding who would be voted off at tribal council.
The next two days’ rafting was much more challenging and “row,
row, row your boat gently down the stream” was definitely
something of the past! We got to run the “Chicken run” channel
that contains three exhilarating rapids named Scorpion,
Screwdriver and Little Falls. Day Three was mostly spent
lowering the boats down into the gorge and preparing to run the
biggest rapid of the route “BIG BUNNY”. A grade four encounter
with one of nature’s most powerful elements that has yet to
disappoint. Although the rapid was run in “individual” teams, it
was a communal experience that is celebrated and valued by the
entire team. To end of this memorable day we ran Dolly Parton
and the evening was spent singing and dancing around the fire. A
gentle row the next morning to where the boats were picked up
was a fitting end to an amazing rafting trip.
Thank you to Graeme and his team for all their support and
guidance during the trip and also a big thank you to Chris and
Robbie for making it possible and investing in our team in this
way! I’m proud to be part of the TBI team.

For us the highlight of our stay in Upington
was definitely our visit to the Orange River - the largest
perennial river in SA, which flows from the highlands of Lesotho
to the Atlantic Ocean.
From the moment we woke up - we were
confronted with and astounded by its beauty and power. Our room
at the Protea Hotel has a great little deck overlooking the
River - so this morning we got to see it covered in mist, as the
day slowly started waking up.
We then headed off for our activity of the
day: White Water Rafting Neus Gorge on the Orange River. We
were super excited and looking forward to an awesome time! An
early morning saw us with swimsuits on (and admittedly jackets
on... as it was FREEZING) making our way through to the tiny,
but quaint little town of Kakamas.
We spent a totally awesome day on the river.
The water, as expected, was more than a tad chilly...but the
excitement of the rapids warmed us up a wee bit. Eben, our
guide, was great! He has recently started his own company...and
his love for the river and chilled-out manner made our trip what
it was.
After surviving the first rapid, lovingly
dubbed "Chicken Run"...and paddling for a while through some
gorgeous scenery - we pulled our boats over onto a side
bank...where Eben proceeded to whip up lunch. Amazing how food
just tastes so much better when you're hungry...and outdoors,
and have spent the day fighting rapids (and hypothermia ) :-) We
all huddled round the fire on the sandbank...and enjoyed
boerewors rolls, before manning the boats again, and making our
merry way along.
Think that Jon and I quite mastered the art
of steering our little boat, as we didn't even capsize once
(something we were quite proud of...) We will admit to going
through two sets of rapids backwards though - but hey... think
we managed to convince people that we planned it that way...so
it's all good.
Pulling out the river at about 3ish...we were thoroughly
exhausted - and more than ready for an early night...but all in
all - oh what a good day.
Thanks to Eben from Liquid360Adventures for
an awesome trip and experience - we would love to come back
again one day... (perhaps in Summer!)
Long drive tomorrow - all the way to
Grahamstown...
Catch up with you there |
